Truth and Authority–A Holy Week Devotional

When it comes to the week between Palm Sunday and the crucifixion, Tuesday was a busy day. The Gospels record more teachings, parables, and confrontations on this day than any other during Holy Week. Jesus spent the day teaching, debating, warning, and revealing truth.

One of the first moments that day was a confrontation. The religious leaders challenged Jesus: “By what authority doest thou these things?” In other words—“Who do you think you are?”

“And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?” – Matthew 21:23 (KJV)

They had already seen Him flip tables. Now He was teaching in their temple, challenging their system, and exposing their hearts. And they couldn’t stand it.

Jesus didn’t shrink back. He answered them with wisdom and clarity. He exposed their hypocrisy. He shared parables that revealed their spiritual blindness. He warned the people not to follow their example. He called out their pride and hardness of heart.

Tuesday reminds us that Jesus wasn’t only compassionate—He was courageous. He spoke truth even when it wasn’t safe or popular.

What about you?

A lot of Christians today base their worldview and beliefs on what’s popular or what their friends think or say–as opposed to what Jesus said. Or they are too afraid to speak up when what they believe might cost them popularity or relationships.

Jesus wasn’t afraid of criticism. He went to the cross.

That’s how committed Jesus was to truth, to the will of the Father, and to you and me.

How committed are you to Him?
