We live in a time where everyone has lots of opinions and loves to express those opinions — but little time or interest in having their opinions challenged or tested. Even less interest in learning more.
More people today are interested in advancing their agendas or interests than in growing intellectually or spiritually. And yet…
A wise person listens to instruction.
A wise man will hear, and will increase learning;
Proverbs 1:5, KJV
and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels.
Wise people read. They listen. They ask questions. They sit under sound teaching and seek out mentors. They aren’t content with surface-level knowledge. Or faith.
Wise people want depth. And they want truth.
But that kind of growth takes effort. And it’s here where many Christians fall short. Not because they lack intelligence. But because they lack commitment.
Do you want to grow in godliness? Then ask yourself:
- Do I read my Bible consistently and carefully?
- Do I sit under clear, biblical teaching and preaching—and actually pay attention?
- Am I part of a quality Bible study group that pushes me deeper?
- Do I welcome correction? Or do I resist it?
God doesn’t just want us to believe—He wants us to learn. The Great Commission includes “teaching them to observe all things I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:20). That means doctrine matters. Theology matters. Truth matters.
So here’s the challenge: Are you serious about learning?
The answer can be revealed in how often you read and study your Bible, how often you pray, how often you attend church (and really pay attention when you’re there), and so forth.
Start today. Open your Bible. Ask questions. Join a Bible study group. Listen. Take notes. Apply what you learn.
Don’t settle for being informed. Be transformed.

Very true. I try to have a perfect attendance in church and Bible study as you know, but age and family commitments show their ugly heads at times and are not under my control. Prime example is tomorrow when my stepson needs me to accompany him for his eye injection.
