Feeling Lost and Alone? Here Are 6 Steps to Get Back on God’s Path

Right now, you might feel lost, defeated, overwhelmed—trapped in a situation that seems impossible. Maybe you’re confused, worn out, and feel like you’re all alone. Life can feel heavy, but I want to encourage you today: God is still on the throne, and He has not forgotten you.

You may feel like giving up, but God is calling you to take life one step at a time, trusting Him with each moment. Here are six biblical truths to hold on to when you’re feeling lost or discouraged — truths that can help you get back on God’s path:

1. Remember that God is still in control

No matter what you’re facing, God is sovereign. He sees you, He knows your situation, and He is still working. The Bible tells us, “The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all” (Psalm 103:19). When life feels chaotic, it’s comforting to know that God reigns over every aspect of your life.

Don’t give up. Trust that God is working behind the scenes, even when you can’t see it. “For with God nothing shall be impossible” (Luke 1:37).

2. Take your burdens to the Lord in prayer

God loves you, and He wants to hear from you. You don’t have to carry your burdens alone. The psalmist reminds us, “Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved” (Psalm 55:22). No matter how deep your hurt or frustration, you can pour it all out to God.

Consider spending time reading through the Psalms. They are filled with prayers from people who experienced deep distress and found comfort in God. “The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth” (Psalm 145:18). Take time to cry out to Him—He hears you.

3. Trust that God oversees your circumstances and the hearts of those around you

It’s easy to feel like everything is out of your hands, but remember that God is ultimately sovereign over people and circumstances. Proverbs 21:1 says, “The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.” This truth — which (I believe) applies to spouses, bosses, family members, co-workers, neighbors, etc.) can bring peace when you feel powerless.

God can work in the hearts of the people in your life. Pray for God’s will to be done and trust His timing.

4. Ask God how He wants you to serve and glorify Him where you are

Your current situation may be difficult, but God can use you right where you are. Ask Him how He wants you to serve Him in this season. Colossians 3:23-24 encourages us, “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.”

Even when your circumstances feel stagnant or painful, there is purpose. Seek God’s guidance on how you can glorify Him in this situation, whether through serving others, showing patience, or being a light to those around you.

5. Ask God for wisdom and dive into the Scriptures

When you don’t know what to do, turn to God’s Word. God promises to give wisdom to those who seek it. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him” (James 1:5).

The book of Proverbs is full of practical wisdom for navigating life. Take time to read through it and ask God to reveal insights for your specific situation. Ivonne Flores once told me a former pastor of hers used to tell people who came to him for advice: “Pray about it, then read Proverbs, and you’ll probably have your answer by the time you get through it.” Or words to that effect. I love that advice. I told her I’d steal it. 🙂

6. Seek godly counsel

When you’re struggling, it’s important to talk to others who are walking closely with the Lord. Seek wisdom, not just opinions, from people who are grounded in Scripture. Proverbs 11:14 says, “Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.”

Find godly mentors or friends who can pray with you, listen, and offer advice rooted in biblical truth. As Proverbs 15:22 reminds us, “Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.”

One Step at a Time

Life can be overwhelming, but God is faithful. Take one step at a time, trusting Him with your circumstances. He will guide you, strengthen you, and give you peace. As you walk through this season, remember the promise of Matthew 6:33-34: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” And…

Don’t forget to claim this psalm…

“Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy;
at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.”

Psalm 16:11

God loves you, He is with you, and He is working all things for your good. Keep trusting, keep praying, and keep looking to Him.
