Our God is Amazing: 6 Characteristics of God

One of the first prayers I learned as a kid was “God is great. God is good. And we thank Him for our food…” You know the prayer. Those first two lines stuck with me throughout my childhood as my parents raised me in the Christian faith. And I still remember them today.

God is great. God is good.

Indeed, He is.

With this blog post, I want to lay out just six — just six of the many — characteristics of the God we worship. And I want to show you just some of the Bible verses which confirm these characteristics. (The verses appear below in the New King James Version).

Here we go…

GOD IS THE CREATOR

  • In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. -Genesis 1:1
  • Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. -Genesis 1:26-27
  • The heavens declare the glory of God;
    And the firmament shows His handiwork.

    -Psalm 19:1
  • For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse. -Romans 1:18-20
  • Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable. -Isaiah 40:28

GOD IS ALL-KNOWING

  • He counts the number of the stars;
    He calls them all by name.
    Great is our Lord, and mighty in power;
    His understanding is infinite.

    -Psalm 147:4-5
  • For God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints, and do minister. -Hebrews 6:10

GOD IS EVERYWHERE PRESENT

  • Can anyone hide himself in secret places,
    So I shall not see him?” says the Lord;
    “Do I not fill heaven and earth?” says the Lord.

    -Jeremiah 23:24
  • The eyes of the Lord are in every place,
    Keeping watch on the evil and the good.

    -Proverbs 15:3
  • And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. -Hebrews 4:13
  • For thus says the High and Lofty One
    Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy:
    “I dwell in the high and holy place,
    With him who has a contrite and humble spirit,
    To revive the spirit of the humble,
    And to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

    -Isaiah 57:15

GOD IS ALL-POWERFUL

  • Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying, “Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is there anything too hard for Me? Jeremiah 32:26-27
  • Then Job answered the Lord and said: “I know that You can do everything, And that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You.” -Job 42:1-2
  • “For with God nothing will be impossible.” -Luke 1:32

GOD IS TRUE AND JUST

  • And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth.” -Exodus 34:6
  • “He is the Rock, His work is perfect; For all His ways are justice, A God of truth and without injustice; Righteous and upright is He.” -Deuteronomy 32:4
  • Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” -John 14:6

GOD IS ALL-LOVING

  • But You, O Lord, are a God full of compassion, and gracious,
    Longsuffering and abundant in mercy and truth.

    -Psalm 86:15
  • For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. -John 3:16
  • He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. -I John 4:8

The above characteristics are obviously not all-inclusive. God is amazing and we could continue forever extolling His awesome virtues and characteristics. And we’ll basically be doing that in Heaven.

There are many more Bible verses as well that could be provided above which speak of God’s characteristics.

Nevertheless, I hope this short blog post is an encouragement to you in your faith. You don’t worship or serve a human-made god or a dead god or a cruel god. You serve an amazing God.

May He bless you and keep you.
