What Does the Bible Say About Abortion?

Many claim the Bible says nothing about abortion. They are wrong to make that claim. The reason they (erroneously) believe the Bible is silent on abortion is because the word “abortion” isn’t in the Bible. But the same can be said for several important issues or doctrines.

For example, the term “incarnation” does not appear in the Scriptures, but John 1:14 (“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us”) and Philippians 2:5-8 clearly teach the concept of God becoming human in the person of Jesus Christ. The word “Trinity” does not appear in the Bible, and yet the concept is supported by numerous passages that describe the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in ways that suggest a triune Godhead. I could go on.

Therefore, to say that the Bible is silent on abortion (and therefore God is indifferent to it) because the word “abortion” isn’t found in the Scriptures is a non sequitur. It’s just patently untrue.

So, what does the Bible have to say on the subject of abortion?

Before we get into this, let me say a few things first.

First, my motive in writing this is not to uphold any so-called “patriarchy” or restrict women’s rights or anything like that. I believe women and men are both made in the image of God. The first chapter of the Book of Genesis is explicit on this point. Therefore, count me among those who supports the dignity and value of women as well as the civil rights of women (just as I support these things for men).

It’s also not to add to any division or polarization. Nor am I writing this to be partisan. I’m not endorsing either political party or any candidate with this post. Neverthless, since eleven states (including Maryland) have proposed abortion-related constitutional amendments on the ballot, I think it’s important that Christians look at what the Bible says on this issue. And, hopefully, what the Bible says will (if you’re a follower of God) inform your vote.

It saddens me that when it comes to abortion, most people seem to have their minds made up, to the extent that they’ve built high, almost impregnable castle walls around their opinions. The drawbridge is up, and no one seems to be listening.

I understand that people erect walls to protect their identity, their feelings, or corners of their heart and soul they aren’t ready to lay bare. I get that, but are you going to close yourself off to God?

I’m also not insensitive to anyone facing an unwanted pregnancy or feeling overwhelmed by their circumstances. I know many women are wrestling with difficult situations, and my heart goes out to each one. I also know there are women who carry wounds related to this topic.

If you’re a woman with conflicted feelings on this issue or pain and anxiety related to this topic, please hear my heart when I say…

God loves you.

I believe God loves the woman who is pregnant, and He loves the baby in the womb.

This article is written in the spirit of love and with the aim of shedding light on what the Bible says on this very important, painful, and controversial subject.

All I’m asking is that you read this with an open mind and a humble spirit. I’m asking you to be “noble-minded” and do as the Bereans did and “search the Scriptures” to see if what I write here aligns with the Bible. If it doesn’t, then go with the Bible. But if it does… then, whether you’re a woman or a man, you and I are all accountable to God.

Final disclaimer… my views do not necessarily reflect those of the members of Olney Baptist Church, though it would sadden me greatly if any member of OBC decides that their take on a given issue (including something as sacred as life) is more valuable than what the Bible has to say.

So, what does the Bible have to say on the subject?

God Values Life

From the very beginning, the Bible makes it clear that God values life. “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” (Genesis 1:27). We, as human beings, are made in the image of God. Men and women are both made in the image of God. Both are valuable and precious to God.

God’s care for life isn’t just abstract. He knows each of us personally. “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.” (Jeremiah 1:5). God’s relationship with us begins before birth. (It actually goes back to the foundations of the universe – see Ephesians 1 – and it certainly extends to the womb). He values every person and has a purpose for each life.

“Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.” (Psalm 139:16). Here, David marvels at God’s intimate knowledge of his being, even when he was in the womb. This reinforces the idea that life begins before birth and is known and cherished by God.

The Bible’s Condemnation of Murder

The Bible is also clear on the subject of taking innocent life. “Thou shalt not kill.” (Exodus 20:13). This commandment is simple and direct—God forbids murder. The Scriptures consistently teach that life is a gift from God, and it’s not ours to take.

At this point, some might raise the question of war or capital punishment. Isn’t the taking of life in those situations also condemned by the Bible? It’s a fair question, and I understand why some Christians may struggle with these issues. The Bible does, in certain instances, allow for the taking of life by civil authorities. Romans 13:4 tells us, “For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.” Here, Paul speaks of the government’s authority to administer justice, including the use of force.

However, we’re not talking about someone breaking into your home with intent to kill. We’re not talking about a soldier taking up arms for his country. We’re talking about an innocent pre-born baby—a life that has committed no crime.

God values life. Human beings are made in His image. And we are commanded not to murder.

It’s pretty clear for those who confront the biblical text honestly.

What Does God Say About Pregnancy and Babies?

The Bible speaks to the beauty and purpose of pregnancy. “Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.” (Psalm 127:3). Children are described as a blessing from the Lord. The Bible treats the life in the womb with honor and significance, not as a burden but as a gift.

“For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.” (Psalm 139:13-14). God’s work in the womb is described here as something marvelous and worthy of praise.

God’s Judgment on Child Sacrifice

Throughout Scripture, God condemns the practice of child sacrifice, a grievous sin committed by pagan nations and, at times, even Israel when they turned away from God. “And they have built the high places of Tophet, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my heart.” (Jeremiah 7:31). God makes it clear that the taking of children’s lives in this way is abhorrent to Him.

In fact, the practice of child sacrifice was one of the reasons God brought judgment upon certain nations. “Because they have forsaken me, and have estranged this place, and have burned incense in it unto other gods… and have filled this place with the blood of innocents.” (Jeremiah 19:4).

Are we not practicing child sacrifice 21st-century style when it comes to abortion?

Conclusion

Taking all of this into consideration, it’s difficult for me to understand how any Christian, with a clear reading of Scripture, can be pro-abortion. I can understand an abortion when medically necessary to save the mother’s life, but abortion on demand? I’m sorry. I can’t see Jesus being okay with that at all!

The Bible consistently upholds the value of human life.

I know this is a sensitive and difficult topic. My hope is not to cause pain or to provoke anger, but to encourage us to look at what God’s Word says about life and the unborn. As Christians, our worldview should be shaped by Scripture, and on the issue of abortion, the Bible speaks clearly about the value of life and the command to protect innocent life.

My prayer is that we, as followers of Christ, would reflect the heart of God in how we treat both the woman and the child–and seek to honor the sacredness of life in all circumstances.
