What Does the Bible Say About Racism?

My heart breaks that our society seems incapable of expunging racism. No matter how much progress we’ve made, news stories like the senseless murder of Ahmaud Arbery by two gun-toting white wannabe vigilantes demonstrate that so much more needs to be done.

All people of faith (and frankly people who may not be part of a faith group or tradition) must unite against racism. There is no room for anyone feeling they are superior to others simply on account of the color of their skin. There should be no room for anyone feeling that another’s life is less sacred or of less value because of skin color, background, race, or any other such consideration.

Sadly, the Christian community has — over the years — not spoken with one united voice against racism. In fact, much of the racism we’ve had in the United States has come from those who consider themselves to be Christian.

It’s both tragic and lamentable that many (presumably) Bible-believing Christians have, over the years, allowed themselves to be swept up into the vile “cult” of white supremacy and that many others have been complicit with racism in their apathy or silence.

Here are 7 Bible verses that clearly lay out God’s position on racism and equality under Heaven:

  • “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” -Genesis 1:27
  • “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” -Matthew 22:39
  • “And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.” -Luke 6:31
  • “Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.” -John 7:24
  • “For there is no respect of persons with God.” -Romans 2:11
  • “For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.” -Romans 10:12
  • “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.” -Galatians 3:28

God loves everyone, and every single human being is fashioned in His image. Racism is incompatible with God’s love for us, and it’s incompatible with how God tells us to love one another.

May all of you reading this – regardless of the color of your skin – feel and experience the love of God today.

God bless you.
